Handbuch für Verliebte
I've just received word that Miss Abigail's Guide to Dating, Mating and Marriage will be published by Lübbe in the summer of 2008. I knew the German rights had been sold but hadn't heard anything specific until now. I'm very excited! The title for their edition will be Handbuch für Verliebte, which translates as Manual for Lovers. Sehr kühl! Labels: book
UMass Dartmouth Alumni Magazine writeup
A feature about me and the collection and site and book appeared in the Spring 2007 edition of the UMass Dartmouth alumni magazine. I did the interview back in January I think. The magazine came out in June, and their Web site recently posted it online. UMass Dartmouth used to be called Southeastern Massachusetts University, which I ended up at after attending the Swain School of Design for a year after attending Greensboro College in N.C. for two years. Yes, my college life was a bit extended, due to some confusion on my part about that whole "what to do with your life" thing. But I guess I turned out okay. Labels: book, press
R.I.P. Thunder's Mouth Press
I was surprised and saddened to learn from an article in Salon.com last week, and this article in the Los Angeles Times, that my publisher will soon be no more. As of, like, Thursday of this week. This has been confirmed by a few visits to the Publishers Group West and Perseus booths at the American Library Association conference this weekend, which I happened to be attending. Still not sure what this all means for me and Miss Abigail's Guide to Dating, Mating, and Marriage. Hey, maybe it'll become a collectible! Buy your copy today, while they last! Actually, I think Perseus will be absorbing the title and hopefully I'll get a marketing person again, but in the meantime if anyone from the press needs a copy, please contact me directly; I've got some on hand. I think the German edition is still supposed to come out someday, not sure when though. Maybe I'll read about it online someday. Sorry to hear that this indie publisher has gone the way of corporate mergers and acquisitions. Many thanks to the Thunder's Mouth staff who I worked with over the past few years. Labels: book
Recent Press Mentions
I'm slowly recovering from the activities of last week. The long weekend helped! Meant to post earlier about these two write-ups from last week. Here they are: The first was on The Washington Express web site--unfortunately I didn't realize the interview was being transcribed, so there are an embarrassing number of "so, like, " phrases in there. I sound like I'm seventeen! I guess that's fitting. There was also a mention of the LC booksigning in the print edition of the Express, which is distributed all over the Washington METRO, on Wednesday. The second was a feature in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. I got a copy of the print version on Friday, they had a big section of old advice excerpts as well. Nice... Welcome Express and Plain Dealer readers! Labels: book, press

Single State of the Union
Some of you may have seen the interesting news today in the New York Times: 51% of Woman Are Now Living Without a Spouse (registration required I believe). The article begins: "For what experts say is probably the first time, more American women are living without a husband than with one, according to a New York Times analysis of census results." As one who doesn't hesitate to offer advice about being single, I cheered a little cheer for my fellow single gals today (yes, it is true, the dating advice maven has no dates right now)! And the good news is, as is shown by the above-mentioned article, we're not as alone as we sometimes feel. Which reminds me, I haven't yet mentioned that I contributed an essay for a book to be released in March 2007 (available for pre-order now) called Single State of the Union: Single Women Speak Out on Life, Love, and the Pursuit of Happiness . Edited by the charming Diane Mapes, the book includes essays by Margaret Cho, Breakup Girl's Lynn Harris, Sasha Cagen, who started the Quirkyalone movement, and many many more. My essay, titled "Single Blessedness," provides a look at advice for singles (good and bad) over the years. I think you'll enjoy it! Labels: book
Playboy Interview Jan 12 4pm EST
A reminder for anyone out there who has Sirius satellite radio and is subscribed to Playboy Radio (Channel 198) -- Miss Abigail is appearing live on the "Afternoon Advice" show, hosted by Tiffany Granath, Friday, January 12, 2007, at 1pm PST/4pm EST. I'll be talking about the book, the site, sharing some advice from the classic sex books, and talking to callers. Should be entertaining! I've had some sinus issues and a sore throat the last week so my voice is nice and sultry for the interview. Labels: book, radio
Planning Ahead: Valentine's Day Reading at LC
Friends in the Library of Congress Science, Technology and Business Division have invited me to come talk about my book, and read some quotes on the topic of love, on Valentine's Day (February 14 for those of you not in the know - a Wednesday this year). I'll be in Dining Room A at 11:30. The event is open to the public, and word is that there will be "love foods," so even if you are ambivalent about V-day, come by and enjoy some treats and have some fun with the classic advice books. More at the Library's public affairs site and on the events page of the Science, Technology and Business Division Web site (the location might say something else right now, but I'll definitely be in Dining Room A). There's a map here: http://www.loc.gov/loc/maps/images/6-madson.jpg. Why the Science, Technology, and Business division, you ask? Remember this Webcast I posted about before? Kindred spirits, I tell ya. Labels: book
Miss Abigail: Playboy Satellite Bunny?
I was contacted yesterday by Playboy Radio (Sirius Satellite Channel 198) about appearing on their "Afternoon Advice" show, described as "an advice show like no other that could only come to you from the minds of Playboy. The show is hosted by Tiffany Granath and she's joined by a rotating panel of experts, authors and celebrities who give their takes on sex and sexuality and takes your calls and may just take them in a direction you never even considered. This show can do everything from interpret your sex dreams, to read your star charts. Our guests can be anywhere from a doctor to a witch to a witchdoctor, all in an attempt to give you another view of your own sexuality." While I'm not a witchdoctor, at this point I suppose I fall into the expert/author category when it comes to classic advice topics, so I agreed to appear on the show. Looks like I'll be live on Friday, January 12, 2007, at 1pm PST/4pm EST, talking about the book, the site, sharing some of the ~ ahem ~ sexier bits of advice that have been left off this site (hey, this is a family Web site here!), and talking to callers. I've got plenty of books about sex that haven't been quoted from yet... looking forward to doing the research for this one. I'll post a reminder and the call-in number closer to the date. Wish me luck! Labels: book, radio

Please come on by and do your holiday shopping early! This book is the perfect gift for absolutely everyone! OK, OK -- small children might not get much out of it -- yet. Much Delayed Book Signing Report
I know that by taking the laptop on the road, and having wireless almost everywhere, I had no excuse for not giving you minute by minute updates about my whereabouts and goings-on while on my dual weddings tour and book tour, but hey, I was on vacation. What do you expect. So, continuing from where I left off with my Brattleboro Blogging post... The Brattleboro book signing at Everyone's Books went well, with 10 or so locals plus my brother and my lovely host Phayvahn. I read from the book, answered a lot of questions, discussing with the attendees all about advice throughout the ages. Phayvahn even brought snacks. At the end of the evening, I was presented (verbally and in a handwritten note, now in my possession) with some advice from an audience member, who suggested, based on some of my commentary: 1) Consider notching up a rung or two and take your subject more seriously. Your feet are on the edge of an important life pursuit if taken to a higher level. 2) Index your books. [I was having trouble finding something in my own book] 3) Start breaking past the 1970 barrier. [my latest is from 1979] 4) Start paying more than $10 for your books. [I mostly stay under $10, but if it's really something I want I will get it for more $] Thank you, kind sir! Miss Abigail certainly welcomes ALL advice. Even somewhat odd advice. Oh, and the best part about the signing, was that right before, at the Brattleboro Selectboard meeting, a citizen complained about nude teenagers in the Harmony parking lot, which happened to be the lot we parked in to go to the book store. Alas we did not see any naked teens, only clothed ones, but this simple complaint to the Selectboard has turned into quite the national news. I feel special to have been there when it all began. Hmm... I'll have to see if there's any good advice about nudity in my books. Moving on. From Brattleboro I took a train down to Springfield, Mass. to rent a car (long story) so I could drive on over to New Bedford, where I stayed with some friends. On Thursday before the signing, I was taken junk shopping where I found two pink things: a pink ice bucket to match my 1950s pink refrigerator, and my very own (pink, of course) Mark Eden Bust Developer (a previously much-coveted item owned in bulk by my tacky friend at Julie's Tacky Treasures). Oh, and I got a special, special treat - a trip to the Barbie Garden! The book signing at Baker Books on Thursday night had a good showing. A few mentions in the local papers and on my university's alumni page were oh so nice. My dear, long-time friend Michelle did the honors of introducing me to the audience. Here she is, after the signing: The crowd, particularly Miss Abigail's World's Biggest Fan Magoo (seen below, on right), really enjoyed book collection, and particularly the bust developer. A special thanks to Amber (on left), for her help in setting up the signing. The following morning Michelle and I took a ride over to one of her favorite used book stores, and Mr. Brattleboro advice-giver will be happy to know that I spent more than $10 each on the books purchased there. These are still in my mom's van so will need to report later on my scores. After that, I packed up my books, bust developer, and more, and drove on over to Mystic, Connecticut, for wedding #2 and to drop off the rental car (thank to Aunt Nancy and Heather's brother for picking me up!). Cousin Tom and Heather's shindig was a lovely event, right on the water in Groton, and it was fun to see the other side of the family (Buffalo wedding was dad's side, Conn. was mom's). I hopped on another train home the next day, so I could make it back to work on Monday. So now you can understand why I didn't have time to blog about this sooner. I'm still recovering! Labels: book
